Exilion Tuuli plays a significant role in strengthening Finland’s self-sufficient energy infrastructure. The company currently operates thirteen wind farms with 380 MW of clean, operational wind power capacity, representing roughly six percent of Finland’s total. The trajectory remains upward: two new wind farms are under construction in 2024.

Founded in 2019, the Finnish company is owned by Mutual Pension Insurance Company Elo, Veritas Pension Insurance and the State Pension Fund of Finland. Exilion’s mission is to accelerate carbon neutrality and support the green transition, while generating stable, low-risk returns for Finnish pensions.

Pasi Valasjärvi, Investment Manager at Exilion Tuuli, oversees all renewable energy production. According to Valasjärvi, the cooperation with Emtele began in 2019, when Exilion acquired the Luhanka wind farm—an asset where Emtele had implemented the OT connectivity. Some of the other wind farms had connectivity solutions from different vendors, and Exilion did not want to risk operational continuity during acquisition.

“We nevertheless decided that, going forward, we want to keep connectivity under our own control. After comparing options and asking around in the industry, Emtele Automation was selected as our partner,” Valasjärvi explains.

Communication, domestic expertise and agility as key strengths

When things work as expected, constant coordination between a wind farm operator and the connectivity provider is unnecessary. Valasjärvi says he typically aligns with Emtele’s Operations Director Kai Rauhamäki about once a year—or when a device requires maintenance. Yet the quality of communication remains consistently high, and reaching Emtele is always easy. Long-term agreements also provide predictability for both sides.

Based on his own experience, Valasjärvi says he would recommend Emtele Automation to other players in the sector as well. Fast delivery times have been particularly important. As a focused Finnish provider, Emtele Automation has been able to respond quickly and flexibly. With a larger international vendor, the process might be considerably more rigid—something that does not support the dynamic needs of wind farm operations, especially when changes arise later.

“Emtele has definitely handled their responsibilities exactly as they should,” Valasjärvi concludes.

Looking ahead, the future appears bright for both companies. The green transition will not slow down—certainly not because of these two Finnish organizations. Emtele Automation will continue to operate OT connectivity in sites under construction, with plans to bring remaining wind farms under the same managed connectivity model.

"There is plenty of work ahead for us."
