Renewable energy production environments are becoming increasingly digitalized – and at the same time more exposed to cyber threats. Prime Capital, an international energy infrastructure investor, has selected Emtele Automation’s FieldCom™ Shield cybersecurity service to protect the OT networks and substations of the Sandbacka and Lappfjärd wind farms, ensuring production continuity and compliance with the requirements of the NIS2 Directive.
FieldCom Shield is a cybersecurity service specifically designed for OT networks and substation environments. It combines continuous monitoring, an expert-driven SOC service, and technologies tailored for renewable energy production. The solution is implemented using OMICRON’s StationGuard and GridOps technologies, in cooperation with Elpartner, which is responsible for the installation and commissioning of the equipment at the substations.
The Lappfjärd and Sandbacka wind farms – a critical part of regional energy production
Located in Finland, the Lappfjärd and Sandbacka wind farms form a significant entity in renewable energy production. Together, Sandbacka and Lappfjärd have a combined installed capacity of approximately 340 MW.
Cybersecurity is not just about compliance – it is about protecting production
The OT networks and substations of wind farms are a central part of energy production. Disturbances can lead to direct production losses, operational outages, and impacts on grid stability. While the NIS2 Directive requires systematic risk management and strengthened cybersecurity, for Prime Capital the key driver was first and foremost securing production.
“We were looking for a solution specifically designed for substations and wind farm OT environments – not generic IT cybersecurity. FieldCom Shield met this need both technically and operationally.”
Steffen Muraszewski, Technical Asset Manager, Senior Associate, Prime Capital
With FieldCom Shield, wind farm OT networks and substation primary and secondary devices are continuously monitored and supervised. Deviations, vulnerabilities, and cyber threats are detected early and addressed by a SOC team specialized in OT environments.
Designed for the real needs of renewable energy and substations
The technical foundation of the solution is based on OMICRON’s cybersecurity technologies, which have been developed specifically for power grid and substation environments.
“StationGuard and GridOps are built to understand how substations and energy systems operate. When combined with Emtele Automation’s FieldCom Shield service, they form a solution that meets the requirements of renewable energy production facilities.”
Tarmo Korhonen, Sales Manager Cybersecurity, OMICRON electronics
Successful implementation also requires competent on-site execution. The installation and commissioning of the equipment were carried out by Emtele’s partner Elpartner Oy.
A dedicated OT cybersecurity service is essential
Prime Capital’s project demonstrates that achieving NIS2 compliance and safeguarding production require a dedicated cybersecurity service specialized in OT networks and substations. Solutions designed for IT environments alone do not adequately address the needs of energy production.
“The purpose of FieldCom Shield is not merely to meet regulatory requirements. It protects wind farm OT networks, supports production continuity, and provides continuous visibility into the cybersecurity status of substations. For renewable energy sites, this has already become a critical baseline requirement.”
